Electro Acoustic Guitars

Electro Acoustic Guitars are simply acoustic guitars that are equipped with a pickup, and often a preamp, so that you can plug your acoustic guitar into an acoustic guitar amp or PA for live performance. You can also use an acoustic pickup to record your electro acoustic guitar by plugging into an interface.

The most common kind of acoustic pickup system is a piezo pickup. A piezo pickup is a thin magnetic strip which sits under the saddle, this is why they are often referred to as undersaddle pickups. More elaborate pickup systems will involve a blend of multiple sound sources such as an internal condenser microphone or a face sensor.

Alongside these piezo pickups guitars can often feature a preamp which can sometimes come with built-in tuners, perfect for beginners, or even effects like the Yamaha Transacoustic.

Electro acoustic guitars often have ‘cutaways’ which means that the body has been shaped so that you can access higher frets with ease. You rarely find cutaway designs without electronics, they tend to go hand in hand with one another.
